Italian seasoning is a spice blend that I use frequently in many of my favorite recipes. It's a blend of italian dried herbs that is a great way to add flavor to a wide array of Italian dishes.

I used to buy it at the store, but found it easier to make your own at home. This Italian seasoning recipe is the best substitute if you happen to run out and can be made using basic herbs that you probably already have in your spice cabinet.

Try this italian seasoning substitute in Italian beef braciole, summer panzanella, baked pepperoni pizza dip or antipasto salad.

    🌿 Ingredient notes

dried basil, oregano, rosemary, marjoram and sage in white dishes with measuring spoons next to it.
    • Basil - This herb is a common ingredient in Italian cuisine and has a fresh flavor with a slight peppery note to it, along with a hint of anise and mint.
    • Oregano - Oregano has a more earthy, robust flavor to it, and is widely popular in both Italian and Greek seasoning.
    • Rosemary - This aromatic herb has an earthy, lemony-pine flavor to it and is used frequently in Italian cooking.
    • Thyme - Thyme is also earthy, but with a more concentrated flavor that contains hints of both floral and pepper.
    • Sage - This herb has an earthy flavor profile similar to the other Italian herbs, with notes of mint, pepper and lemon.
    • Marjoram - Similar to rosemary, this pine flavored herb also has a citrusy, floral flavor to it.

    📋 Substitutions and variations

Most Italian seasoning blends consist of only herbs, but if you want to add extra depth of flavor, here are some options to jazz it up a bit.

    • Red Pepper - Add ½ teaspoon of crushed red pepper flakes to add a bit of spice.
    • Garlic/Onion - Add ½ teaspoon of garlic powder and/or onion powder to add an extra savory flavor to the seasoning.
    • Salt - Add ½ teaspoon of kosher salt to enhance the seasoning in your dish.
    • Fennel - Add ½ teaspoon of fennel seeds to add a slightly sweet, licorice flavor.

    🥣 Step by step instructions

First, mix together the herbs in a bowl until they are thoroughly combined. Use the blend of herbs immediately or store in an airtight container for use later.
